Welcome

I’ve repeatedly asked myself “Where do I start?” for the last couple of months.

This summer was my summer of FUNemployment, meaning I was enjoying being unemployed. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I was laid off from a job a somewhat enjoyed. It’s left me with plenty of time to think about what’s next. I’ve been wanting to pick up a new hobby that would allow me to learn and create, something that wouldn’t feel like a chore. Eventually I landed on game design.

So, where to start? I did my Googles and searched through numerous reddit threads outdated message boards for advice. The general consensus was “Just start.”

Taking that piece of advice to heart, I began jotting down some ideas I’ve had in mind for a 2D RPG (more on that in the future). I gathered some resources to aid me in my learning journey. “The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses” written by Jesse Schell is lauded as essential reading for those interested in learning game design.

I also downloaded the Game Design Documents for Grand Theft Auto and Deux EX (I might link them here). I’m planning to look for GDDs for turn-based RPGs since that’s my main interest here.

I’m excited to explore game design and begin creating. I’m hoping to use this blog as a sort of learning journal and a way to keep myself engaged.

Until next time,
Alex
